GeoSLAM approached us to design a bespoke handle for their 3D environment-mapping hardware, the ZEB-REVO. The company were providing their customers with an off-the-shelf DLSR camera handle, but felt that it did not reflect the high level of value that their product offered. The new design needed to be suitable for low-volume manufacture and look seamlessly integrated to the design of their product, as well as being ergonomically appropriate.
We worked to very tight timescales so that GeoSLAM could provide a new handle to every customer who had already purchased a ZEB-REVO. We produced several concepts, each integrating into the aesthetic of the unit in their own way, and worked with GeoSLAM to produce a handle that they were confident to supply as part of their product pack.
Utilising the soft-tooling benefits of our in-house vacuum-casting facilities, we were able to design a handle with areas of 0˚ draft to minimise the number of components per assembly, keeping the manufacturing costs as low as possible at the production volumes required.
The final design is an unobtrusive, ergonomically and aesthetically pleasing handle that looks integrated into the unit and enhances the perceived value of the kit of parts.
We turned to PDG because of their expertise in product design, and in particular design of plastic moulded parts. Their in-house manufacturing facility for volume production was also a factor in our decision as it meant that we got an end to end service. The design was completed well within our target time frame and PDG have provided a faultless service ever since.
